The stories we are told shape us. They inform our beliefs and behaviours around things like what it means to be a man or what it means to be a woman, deepening regressive gender norms.
Breakthrough’s Media Center uses art and pop culture to inspire action against gender-based violence. In a digital world, where stories arise at the touch of a smartphone button, Breakthrough creates spaces for the voices of women and girls to be heard. By engaging with communities and collaborating with content creators, we amplify the lived experiences of women and girls through film, social media and more so that stories and conversations on gender-inclusion and changing norms can emerge.
This is more important now than ever before. The boon of technology also brings challenges like Tech-Facilitated Gender Violence (TFGV). Breakthrough leads from the front, advocating for digital platforms to take accountability while seeing the issue as a consequence of unequal digital access and deep-seated gender norms. Continuous engagement with young people to spark critical thinking helps build safer online spaces.
As more artists, writers, actors, musicians and content creators join the effort, a new wave of gender-equality is on the rise.
