We conducted a tweet-a-thon today with Why Loiter on the theme “reclaiming public spaces”. We received some very interesting responses adding to the ongoing #IWillGoOut movement.
Things women are told:
One woman was told not to walk in a park but being told to exercise in a gym instead. #IWillGoOut@samjourno123 @VarshaBhargavi https://t.co/LaRK7RPldQ

Also some girls were told it would reflect on family honour and this honour was in their hands.#IWillGoOut@INBreakthrough @KashmiriKudi

How women are institutionally denied access to public spaces:
The worst kind of institutional denial is to disabled women (and men) who simply cannot access some spaces@INBreakthrough #IWillGoOut

BIGGEST INSTITUTIONAL DENIAL: Most public toilets, section for women closes at night! #IWillGoOut@INBreakthrough @iwillgoout2017

@INBreakthrough @whyloiter @iwillgoout2017 curfews at hostels and even PGs for working women tell women where their place is. #IWillGoOut

Hostel curfews mean no theatre, late night cinema or walks in the city for women who live there#IWillGoOut@INBreakthrough @Femme_Furious
— Why Loiter? (@whyloiter) January 20, 2017
Also those cities that do not have viable public transport are enacting a form of violence against women.@INBreakthrough#IWillGoOut
— Why Loiter? (@whyloiter) January 20, 2017
Municipalities must be held accountable for providing infrastructure like transport, lighting and toilets.#IWillGoOut@INBreakthrough

@INBreakthrough @whyloiter @iwillgoout2017 There’s also the religious reasons for keeping women out of temples, dargas etc. #IWillGoOut

Some ways in which women’s mobility is restricted:
Also women are expected to report their movements, more so now that there are cell phones. #IWillGoOut@INBreakthrough @iwillgoout2017
— Why Loiter? (@whyloiter) January 20, 2017
Like so many are saying the notion that women are responsible for anything that happens to them outside the home.@INBreakthrough @povmumbai
— Why Loiter? (@whyloiter) January 20, 2017
And inside the home nobody will take responsibility for the violence women face.#IWillGoOut @samjourno123 @INBreakthrough @mizarcle

Why movements like #IWillGoOut are important:
@INBreakthrough @iwillgoout2017 @whyloiter Take back the spaces that are rightfully ours. Not budge. Not give in.We WILL go out. #IWillGoOut
— Bose (@Femme_Furious) January 20, 2017
Protests like #IWillGoOut make the point that there is a critical mass. This is important.@INBreakthrough @iwillgoout2017 @Femme_Furious
— Why Loiter? (@whyloiter) January 20, 2017
Also, simply for joy as pure as this:
@INBreakthrough I go out anyway. I like being out at night. The roads are empty and you can hear the silent night. #IWillGoOut

#IWillGoOut is a nationwide march on 21st Jan. The march across the country will assert that women have a right to be in a public space and that they will not let restrictions rooted in patriarchy bow them down.
