million
adolescents and young people
Breakthrough has reached over 5.4 million adolescents and young people in the last 26 years through its direct work in the communities and through government partnerships
Breakthrough works to end inequality that limits girls’ and women’s lives and to expand their freedom to learn, choose, and lead.
We begin with young people – with girls and boys who question unfair rules, imagine different futures, and act with courage. When beliefs change, lives change and communities begin to move toward equality.
When girls and women are free to shape their own futures, families are stronger, economies grow, and societies everywhere benefit.
Breakthrough works across the everyday spaces where girls’ lives unfold and gender norms are formed because change must reach every part of life to last.
engaging families to support girls’ education, safety, and choices
building youth leadership and collective action
creating classrooms grounded in respect, equality, and aspiration
partnering with government education systems to embed equality in structure, classrooms and school culture
shifting narratives through media, storytelling, and popular culture
Reframe is Breakthrough’s annual summit that brings together diverse sectors to move gender equality from conversation to action. It aims to elevate the conversation on gender equality and advocate for gender norm change by proposing innovations, solutions, and experiences of what has worked on the ground, and what future possibilities look like .
The goal is to build shared understanding, spark collaboration, and drive real commitment toward gender equality in India.
Breakthrough co-leads the India Coalition for Education for Gender Equality, a national platform bringing together over 32 civil society organisations, researchers, youth leaders, and academic institutions to work together to advance systemic change in and through education.
Together, Coalition partners currently cover nearly 90% of India’s geography and reach over 50 million adolescents — representing approximately 16% of India’s adolescent population. This scale provides a powerful foundation for shared learning, influence, and systems change.
Breakthrough is here to change the culture that stops women and girls from leading fulfilling lives. We work with young people in schools, communities and through media to shift mindsets and social beliefs so that young women can aspire, work, live and play on equal terms.
A young generation is shaping a world of equality, dignity and justice, one life-story at a time Through our work in media, communities and school systems, like the Chaman Rishman programme with the Government of Punjab and Barnali with the Government of Orissa, we have reached over 2.3 million young people. As these young people push for equality, dignity and justice in their own lives, they enable a shift to an equal world, one life story at a time.
